Year 6 SATs Grammar & Spelling Revision

Primary school children learning in a classroom

Grammar Knowledge for SATs

The SATs GPS paper tests the full KS2 grammar curriculum in a timed 45-minute paper:

  • Word classes and their grammatical functions: determiners, prepositions, pronouns
  • Clause types: main, subordinate, relative; co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions
  • Active and passive voice; formal and informal register
  • Modal verbs, subjunctive mood and the perfect tense

Punctuation

The GPS paper rewards children who can correctly identify and use a wide range of punctuation:

  • Commas for lists, fronted adverbials and relative clauses
  • Apostrophes for omission and singular/plural possession
  • Inverted commas, colons, semi-colons, brackets and dashes
  • Hyphens to avoid ambiguity; bullet points for lists

Spelling Strategies

Spelling accounts for a significant proportion of marks across the GPS papers:

  • Learning and revising all statutory spellings from the Year 5/6 word list
  • Applying morphological knowledge: prefixes (mis-, dis-, over-) and suffixes (-ation, -ous)
  • Homophones and commonly confused words (e.g. affect/effect, their/there)
  • Practising words that do not follow standard phonetic patterns
