Year 6 Grammar & Spelling Questions
Grammar
Year 6 GPS work develops grammatical knowledge that supports both reading and writing:
- Identifying all word classes including determiners, prepositions and pronouns
- Understanding main and subordinate clauses; relative clauses and fronted adverbials
- Forming plurals and applying irregular forms (e.g. child/children, mouse/mice)
- Using the present perfect, past tense and continuous forms correctly
Punctuation
Accurate punctuation makes writing clearer and more expressive:
- Commas in lists, after fronted adverbials and around relative clauses
- Apostrophes for omission and possession; inverted commas for direct speech
- Colons, semi-colons, dashes and brackets used accurately for effect
- Editing for punctuation as part of the drafting and revising process
Spelling
Systematic spelling teaching in primary school builds lifelong accuracy:
- Learning all statutory spellings from the Year 5/6 word lists
- Applying morphological knowledge: prefixes and suffixes to build new words
- Identifying and learning common homophones (e.g. there/their/they're)
- Using a dictionary and thesaurus to extend and verify vocabulary choices
