Year 4 Maths Questions

Primary school children learning in a classroom

Multiplication Tables

Year 4 is the year of the Multiplication Tables Check — all 12 x 12 facts must be secure:

  • Rapid recall of all times tables up to 12 x 12
  • Using multiplication and division as inverse operations
  • Solving word problems involving multiplication and division
  • Scaling up quantities using multiplicative reasoning

Fractions & Decimals

Year 4 significantly extends fraction and decimal work:

  • Recognising and generating equivalent fractions (e.g. 1/2 = 2/4)
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator
  • Understanding tenths and hundredths as fractions and decimals
  • Rounding decimals to the nearest whole number

Place Value & Measurement

Children work with larger numbers and a wider range of measurement contexts:

  • Place value to 10,000 including negative numbers and Roman numerals
  • Converting between metric units: mm, cm, m, km; g, kg; ml, l
  • Area and perimeter of rectangles and irregular rectilinear shapes
  • Reading 12-hour and 24-hour clocks accurately
