GL Assessment Questions
GL Assessment 11+ — Overview
GL Assessment is the most widely used 11+ exam provider in England, used by grammar schools in Sutton, Barnet, Bromley, Kingston and more:
- Standard format: Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers
- Multiple-choice answer format with strict time limits
- Standardised Age Score (SAS) used to compare children across different test dates
- Results typically available 2-3 weeks after the exam
GL Maths & English
The GL maths and English papers test curriculum knowledge at an advanced level:
- Maths: 48 questions in 60 minutes covering arithmetic, geometry, data handling and problem-solving
- English: comprehension passages with retrieval, inference and language analysis questions
- Both papers require speed and accuracy — time management is critical
- Questions progress from straightforward to challenging, testing the full ability range
GL Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning
Reasoning papers test logical thinking skills that are less dependent on school teaching:
- Verbal Reasoning: codes, analogies, word relationships and logical deduction
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: shape patterns, rotations, reflections and matrices
- These papers reward targeted practice — the question formats are learnable
- YearWise covers all 27 GL VR question types and standard NVR formats
